Phylum Porifera
These basic organisms include the marine filter feeders, the sponges. They have no true organs or tissues. They are considered cellular grade organisms, which are the simplest form of multi-cellular life. The living tissue of the sponge is found around a central cavity (opening). Water enters through the pores of the structure. Food is extracted from the water by either cilia or flagella. These structures pass the food to the digestive cells. Sponges appear in reef structures throughout geologic time, from Cambrian to Recent.
Could it be a Porifera?
These specimens will have visible pores on the outside. It is distinguishable from bryozoans as its diameter is larger than 1 mm, there is no corkscrew shape and it is not a thin, branching specimen. Sponges can be found in many shapes and sizes.
